Patients who are missing many or all of their teeth may benefit from a complete or partial denture. At Lakeshore dental, Drs. Jaime and Eliud Villarreal provide a variety of denture options so that patients may regain a fully functional set of teeth.
What is a Denture?
Dentures are a restorative prosthetic, used to replace many or all missing teeth. Depending on the amount of natural teeth a patient has retained, a certain type of denture may be used. In our Rockwall dental office, we provide:
Complete Dentures: Complete dentures are beneficial for patients missing all of their teeth. A complete denture may replace either an entire upper or lower dental arch, and allows wearers to retain their facial skeletal structure. Complete dentures also improve a patient’s eating and speaking ability.
Partial Dentures: For patients with several missing teeth, a partial denture may be used, which is a single appliance that fills in gaps between teeth. Partial dentures come in different forms depending on the location of the missing teeth and keep natural teeth from shifting into their gaps. Like complete dentures, partials also improve eating and chewing ability.
Implant-Supported Dentures: An implant-supported denture involves placing dental implants that attach to a full arch prosthetic. The dentures are removable, and snap into place for a secure fit. Dentures that are supported by implants have additional stability and are designed to function like natural teeth.
What Happens When I Receive Dentures?
A patient may need dentures if they are missing several or all of their teeth. In order to receive a complete denture, any natural teeth must be removed and a healing period of four to six weeks must take place. A temporary immediate denture will be created for use during the healing process and while the conventional denture is being created.
Candidates for partial dentures will have any anchoring teeth prepared so that they can properly support the denture appliance. Impressions will be taken of the upper and lower arches and sent to a laboratory to be created. Once the partials return, they will be placed and adjusted to ensure proper fit.
